ZT Lunchbox guitar amplifier (review)

It’s been a while since this amp hit the streets, I would say since late 2009, and I’ve known of it since 2010, and now I finally got one! :D So I think it’s time to review it.

So what the f is the Lunchbox?
- Well, The ZT Amplifiers Lunchbox is a small piece of gear with awesome power for home practice, recording and live gigs. It measures 7.3″ x 9.8″ x 4.4″ / 185mm x 250mm x 112mm and weighs in at 9.5lbs/4.7kg. Controls consist of Gain, Volume, Tone and Ambiance (which is NOT a real reverb effect). On the back panel there is a switch for the AC power, 115v/230v selector, ¼” extension speaker jack, ¼” headphone jack with Volume control, speaker on/off switch and a 1/8″ auxiliary input. The cabinet made of MDF with high gloss finish houses a 6.5″ speaker.

These are some pics of the Lunchbox (Mini-Stack, next to a real lunchbox and the box of it):

Controls:
1. Ambiance, it’s not a reverb… it’s more like the difference between a close-back and an open-back cabinet. At lower settings it added a little air and depth to the overall sound and at higher settings it sounded more like you had the amp in a small bathroom.
2. Tone, it will allow you to go from fender~ish cleans to nice bottom-end sounds. It’s like a ‘contour’ control.
3. Gain, well it’s the gain xD It will NOT be hi-gain, but good enough for blues and some rock overdriven rhythms.
4. Volume, self-explanatory.

Is it loud?
- The Lunchbox is rated at 200 watts, 125dB @ 1 meter. So… yeah! It’s effing loud! So don’t think of it as your regular practice amp or anything… it can make your ears bleed with beautiful sounds.

Does it like pedals?
- Ohhhh, it LOVES pedals… throw whatever you want and you will just make it sound even better (I’m using a Line 6 POD HD500 and it really rocks!).

Conclusion:
- If you are looking for a small (really small) amp to take to jams, practices or gigs then this amp is all what you need. Jazz players will love this amp because of it’s clear volume, warm tone and portable size. Even though it is NOT a tube amp, it does have nice dynamics and is warm sounding even with the 6.5″ speaker.

It is definitely one of the better sounding solid state amps I’ve heard!
